I bought this DVD recorder a month ago and it was great except for one thing: the timer record function did not work. The tuner is very good, the recording quality is good, but when I would program it to record I would always get the E40 error, which means the program was not recorded due to overlap. It would say this when there was no overlapping program — even when there was only one show programmed at a time. When I called Toshiba they said they had never heard of this problem. They told me to unplug the unit and plug it back in, which I did, and it didn’t help. I was about to take the unit back to the store when I decided to do one more Internet search, and I finally found a fix on somebody’s blog which seems to have solved the problem. If you are having timer recording errors, try this: 1. Unplug the unit for 5 minutes. 2. Plug it back in and turn it on. 3. Go to the general setup menu and choose “Reset All.” 4. Rescan all your channels. 5. Now try the timer record function. 6. Also, you should go into the clock setting and turn the auto clock set to off so the clock won’t reset itself to the wrong time. I have done all these things and so far so good. I notice that a previous reviewer said that people who are giving bad reviews to this product should try harder to find a solution to their problem. It is good to be knowledgeable about how to find information. However, the responsibility lies with Toshiba to fix these problems, not with the consumer. I am fairly savvy and it took a lot of effort to find what I needed. And for heaven’s sake, if anybody should have the information, it should be the Toshiba tech support line. Toshiba, fix your product. And please put some more effort into writing a better manual for it.
