Deskjet D1660 Printer (CB770A#B1H) CustomerReview
I suppose I am fortunate in that I have not experienced the problems that others have. I have waited a year since purchasing this printer to write a review. Am I ecstatic? No. Will this printer solve all of your printing problems? No. However, in my experience, this printer will perform a yeoman’s job on your everyday printing needs. I purchased this when I needed an emergency printer while my large Canon was in the shop. I have since used it as the primary printer for my laptop (on my third ink cartridge) since it is small enough to be portable. Used with my prior laptop with an Intel Atom chip and 2 GB of RAM, I ran into memory problems when printing while online; I solved this problem by saving the items I wish to print as PDF files and printing them while off-line. My present lap top has an Intel iCore3 chip with 4 GB of RAM. The extra memory has solved many of the delay problems. The problem seems to be that the printer relies entirely on the computer for memory, resulting in something of a ‘conflict of interest’ when it comes to printing large documents. Therefore, the more memory required by the program(s) you are running, the less memory is available for the printer, and the slower the printer will run. I have found that patience is truly a virtue with this printer. Sometimes, you just need to walk away and give the printer a chance (sometimes a loooooong chance.) Early on, I mistook printer delay for printer error and rebooted, or canceled and resent the print job, which simply put off the inevitable solution of ‘patience’. Give the printer time, and it will serve you well. As for the USB cable, no present printers seem to come with them. The last time I received a connection cable for a printer was about 15 years ago with the original HP DeskJet. That cable was a serial RS-232 cable, and was supplied with the printer back when that was the only interface used. Since cables come in different lengths and printers are placed varying distances from the computer, it makes more sense to allow the customer to purchase the needed cable separately from the printer. Now that I have written this, the printer may die tomorrow. So what? I got my worth out of it and will gladly purchase another (plus, I have to use up all of my spare ink cartridges).
